Being a Fairtrade School

Are you a pupil at a Sutton school, or are you involved as a teacher, parent or governor ?

Many schools in Sutton support FAIRTRADE in all kinds of ways –selling products in school canteens or staff rooms, including it as part of the curriculum – geography, PSHE, economics, business studies and food science classes – it is a topic that has so much relevance for so many areas.

Here are some suggestions:-

John Fisher School recently held a Fair Trade Quiz Night. The following report was written by one of the pupils.

On Friday 11th March, the John Fisher Enterprise council decided to host a Fair Trade Quiz night to bring to an end the schools celebration of Fairtrade fortnight. The evening was based around increasing peoples awareness of Fairtrade, with three stalls selling numerous fairtrade items including underwear, hand-made crafts, and jewellery. Sutton Fairtrade supported the event, with guest speaker Judy Walsh showing simple but effective examples of Fairtrade in action. The main event of the evening was the quiz. The quiz consisted of 8 rounds, which carried a Fairtrade theme. The hosts of the evening were a Mr JJ Thornton and a Mr James Timmins, who showed enthusiasm and were a hit with the audience.(They could be the new Ant and Dec!) At the interval, the audience were allowed to browse the array of stalls, purchase some raffle tickets and pick up a glass of Fairtrade wine. The second part of the evening consisted of the showing of the Fairtrade film, which the pupils and staff of the John Fisher School had made during the previous months. The film depicted the seriousness of Fairtrade, but at the same time, showed how it’s something to be enjoyed and celebrated. You can see this video at the Enterprise Councils website www.jfs2ghana.co.uk. You can also follow the Enterprise council on Twitter ‘@JFSGhana2011’ and on Facebook in the ‘John Fisher Enterprise Council group.
At the end of the evening, the winner of the raffle was announced along with the winner of the quiz, who was surprisingly one of the three teacher’s tables at the event. After all the hard work that we had put in, myself along with the other members of the enterprise council would like to thank Mr Scully for giving us the green light for the evening, all the businesses who got involved, and a very big and special thanks to a Mr Dean for all of his hard work and perseverance he undertook, to really make Friday’s evening a great array of entertainment and show the importance of fairtrade.
